- Stripe decline code
network_decline_code: "82"- Network response code
- 82
- Can a retry work?
- No, the customer needs a new card
- What to do
- Don't retry. Ask the customer to re-enter or replace the card.
What it means for a subscription payment
Code 82 isn't the same everywhere; check the card brand. On Visa it means "Negative CAM, dCVV, iCVV, or CVV results": the card's security or verification data didn't check out. On Mastercard it means "Invalid transaction/merchant", which processors also report as a policy decline.
On a subscription the card details were stored months ago, so a Visa 82 usually points to card data the issuer no longer accepts, often after a reissue.
Should you retry?
No. Retrying sends the same card data, so it fails the same way. Processors such as Adyen don't advise retrying 82, and Mastercard's merchant advice for it can say not to retry at all.
What to send the customer
Ask the customer to enter their card again. A fresh entry replaces the stored data that failed.
Please re-enter your card for Acme Analytics
Hi Maya, your bank couldn't verify the card on file for your $49.00 Acme Analytics renewal.
Please enter your card again, or use another one.
Update cardHow LastRetry handles it
LastRetry treats card-data declines like incorrect_cvc as needing a new card entry: no retries, an email in your name with a card update link, and an immediate charge once it's entered.

Not with the same card details. The customer needs to re-enter the card or use another one.
