What it means for a subscription payment
Stripe: "The customer can't use this card to make this payment (it's possible it was reported lost or stolen)." Network codes 04 and 07 mean pick up card; 41 and 43 mean lost and stolen.
For a subscription it usually means the customer's bank has replaced the card. Your customer may not even know the old one was still on file with you.
Should you retry?
Never. Visa puts these codes in category 1, "issuer will never approve", where reattempts aren't permitted, and Stripe lists pickup_card, lost_card and stolen_card among the hard declines it won't retry.
What to send the customer
Stripe advises not to tell the customer the card was reported lost or stolen; present it like a generic decline. Simply ask for a new card.
Please update your card for Acme Analytics
Hi Maya, we couldn't charge the card on file for your $49.00 Acme Analytics renewal.
Please add a new card to keep your subscription running.
Add a new cardHow LastRetry handles it
LastRetry never retries these codes. It emails the customer for a new card in neutral wording and charges the invoice the moment one is added.
Questions
Should I tell the customer the card was reported stolen?
No. Stripe recommends presenting lost and stolen card declines as a generic decline, and just asking for another card.
Can I retry a pick up card decline?
No. Card networks don't allow reattempts on these codes, and Stripe won't retry them automatically.
Decline codes vary by card network, issuer and processor; the meanings here follow Stripe's documentation and common network usage. Updated October 4, 2026.
