What it means for a subscription payment
Stripe: "The card has insufficient funds to complete the purchase." On a debit card the account balance was too low; on a credit card the charge would have gone over the limit (Mastercard's 51 covers both).
For subscriptions this is the classic involuntary failure: the customer still wants the product, the renewal just landed a few days before their salary.
Should you retry?
Yes. Visa puts 51 in the category "issuer cannot approve at this time", which can be retried (up to 15 times in 30 days). Retrying the same day rarely helps; retrying after money arrives often does.
Common paydays are the 1st and the 15th of the month, and the last working day. A retry the day after, on a weekday, has the best chance.
What to send the customer
Tell the customer gently, and don't mention their balance. Offer a card update in case they'd rather use another card.
We'll try your Acme Analytics payment again
Hi Maya, your $49.00 renewal for Acme Analytics didn't go through. We'll try again in a few days, so there's nothing you need to do.
If you'd like to use a different card, you can update it here.
Update cardHow LastRetry handles it
LastRetry schedules the retry for the day after the next 1st or 15th, on a weekday, and sends a friendly heads-up email in your name. If the customer adds a new card first, it's charged straight away.
Questions
What does decline code 51 (response code 51) mean?
Insufficient funds: the account didn't have enough money, or the charge would have gone over the credit limit. Visa and Mastercard both use 51 for this, and Stripe reports it as insufficient_funds.
When should I retry an insufficient funds payment?
After the customer is likely to have been paid: the day after the 1st or the 15th, on a weekday. Retrying the same day rarely works.
Is insufficient funds a hard decline?
No. It's a soft decline; the card is valid and a later retry can succeed.
Decline codes vary by card network, issuer and processor; the meanings here follow Stripe's documentation and common network usage. Updated October 4, 2026.
